In the context of an overall China strategy, research & development (R&D) can mean many things. One example is the U.S. Company that says they need a product (or assembly, or component) designed from scratch… and they currently only have an idea for that product. Here R&D embodies the entire process from concept to engineering onwards. Another firm may have drawings completed… another may have gone as far as having made prototypes or samples. Those samples may need testing or design improvements to move closer to fully productizing the concept.

 

Companies even further along may already have the drawings, the samples, have completed a test production run, and have proven the product works. But now, the U.S. company needs to enhance the design of the product to reduce cost, improve volume, and ultimately take it to China.
